HEALING

HEALING

If we’re gonna heal, let it be glorious.
— Warsan Shire

Audre Lorde wove her truth throughout A Burst of Light and other Essays, an honest compilation of journal entries from her experience of living with cancer and being inspired to live because of her work, the work she felt needed to be done. The work she knew would outlast her life expectancy so she left us this 90-page blueprint-essay. Her experience isn't just a North Star, it's an intuitive moral compass urging us to be full, honest and responsible to our personal truths.

Paired with songs from Solange’s timeless ethnography of a Black woman’s experience in this world, A Seat at the Table, I urge you to affirm yourself, validate yourself and begin to love the truth that you are and becoming with these affirmations from our Lorde. You are power.

The following affirmations are found in the title-work, A Burst of Light: Living with Cancer by Audre Lorde. The award-winning collection of works, featuring an interview on sadomasochism, is being re-released next month with a warm, timely and sisterly foreward by Sister Sonia Sanchez. You can order your very own copy here.

[NOTE: The affirmation and song pairings are curated chronologically, to the tracklist for "A Seat at the Table".]

A meditation practice for maximum expression of growth potential, for wherever and however you are:

  1. Make time and space for yourself and your self-care. No one is gonna give you permission to heal. Your healing is resistance.

  2. Listen to the song that coincides with how you feel. Read the affirmation aloud that you need to hear. Know that you are not alone.

  3. Close your eyes and realize the world around you. Note the sounds, feelings, thoughts that enter and escape you.

  4. With your eyes still closed, breathe fully in through your nose filling your entire body with air. You should feel air reaching every corner inside of you.

  5. As you exhale through your mouth, imagine yourself releasing the weight of your past and your current experience. It serves its purpose.

  6. Repeat steps two through five until you feel grounded in your body and clear in your head.

  7. Give gratitude to yourself for having power over your healing. Give gratitude to your guides, ancestors, teachers, mentors, examples for their influence, love and support.

  8. Repeat this process as a necessity.
